In the older Thomas the train books Sir Topham Hat is not called Sir Topham Hat, rather he is referred to as the Fat Controller. Why do I like this name better? Why do I feel like a bad parent using it when reading to my kids?For instance, here is a quote from "James and Toby" a board book based on THE RAILWAY SERIES by The Rev. W. Awdry.
Gordon the Big Engine had been working hard. The Fat Controller decided to give him a rest. "James will do your work," he said.
