How to Make a Klean Kanteen Water Bottle Holder
With the raised concern of plastic water bottles with bisphenol A (BPA) many folks these days are switching from the plastic bottle made popular by Nalgene to a non plastic alternative to avoid the potential effects of the BPA chemical. Not all plastic bottles contain the BPA chemical, but many folks, like ourselves are feeling more at ease avoiding the plastic bottles all together. Our family switched to the Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottles and have really been enjoying the switch.
Since the stainless steel Klean Kanteen is a much better conductor than a plastic bottle, the temperature of your favorite beverage will be noticed much more on the outside of the stainless steel bottle. So if you were to fill the bottle with icey water, the bottle would feel much cooler than it would with the hard plastic style water bottle. The Klean Kanteen also has more potential to be dented when dropped than a durable hard plastic water bottle. Thus, the BananaForce family created water bottle holders for their new fleet of water bottles.
The instructions below can be used to create water bottle holders for the 12 oz, 18 oz and 27 oz Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottles.
-
For the main part of the holder, cut a piece of pre-quilted fabric or fleece that measures 10 1/4" x 6 1/4” (this is for 12 oz size; cut piece 10 1/4 “ x 4 1/4" for 18 oz bottle and 10 1/4" x 9 3/4” for 27 oz bottle).*
-
For contrasting piece on the top of the holder, cut a piece of fabric (cotton, or cotton poly mix) measuring 3" x 10 ½ ”.
Fold over ½ “ on both ends and press. Stitch with 3/8" seam allowance. Fold piece in half the long way and press.*
-
Center and pin contrasting fabric onto right side of main piece with raw ends matching.
Sew together with ½" seam allowance. Zig-zag raw edge. Fold contrasting piece up and away from main piece and press.
-
Cut four lengths of ribbon or bias tape measuring 2 ½" in length. Fold over ½" on both ends and press (all four pieces).
Find center of main piece and mark with pin. Place ribbon pieces with their centers measuring 2 1/4" from center pin in main piece. Lower ribbons should be 1" above lower edge, and upper ribbons should be 1/4" below contrasting fabric. Sew on ribbon pieces very close to outer edges of ribbon (approximately 1/8").
-
Fold project in half with right sides facing. Pin and sew along side with ½" seam.
-
Cut two circles of fabric measuring 4" in diameter–one of the contrasting fabric, and one of something a little sturdier (I used a recycled piece of denim). Pin pieces together and sew in fun pattern to hold them together.
-
Draw a seam line around bottom of main piece ½" from the bottom. Make a small cut (about 3/8") every inch or so around base. Pin circle to main piece with right sides together. Sew together following your ½" seam guide line.
Trim seam to 1/4" and clip out a small triangle every inch or so being careful not to cut into the seam. Turn holder right side out.
-
Insert a cord through contrasting piece and put on a spring loaded cincher. Tie a knot in the end to keep cincher from falling off. Lace strap through ribbon loops and attach to plastic strap-adjuster piece. Optional: fold over and sew adjustable end of strap so it doesn’t slide out of adjuster.
-
Insert water bottle and go!
-
Enjoy!
*If you want your contrasting fabric to show a little more, add ½" to it and subtract 1/4" from main piece. Or for even a little more, add 1" to contrasting fabric and subtract ½" from main piece.
